Waterhouse Gardens: Planting

The former home of Boddingtons Brewery in Manchester is now a thriving commercial and residential community, and one where our Plantapanel modular retaining wall created masses of new planting area.

The main focal points are the Spanish Steps with around 144 linear metres of undulating, ribbon-like panels over 8 levels, including 4 resting nooks with integrated seating. Next up are the College Steps, made up from 66 completely unique panel shapes plus many more standards.

It doesn’t end there! on the Boulevard we supplied 5 completely unique planting areas, all individually twisty and curvy to adhere to the challenging site levels. We needed to complete some truly old-fashioned hand-metal work on the transitions to achieve the complex curvature required.

Finally we have Trinity Way, where a further 5 (or 5 1/2) planters reside. During the design phase 2 individual units were joined together via a blockwork retaining wall, which led us to create some hugely complex panel transitions seamlessly connected to cladding and capping for the wall.
