This huge open area by the river Thames was long-neglected and had the potential of serving the local community more broadly. The landscape architect’s design modernised the space adding far more seating, more opportunities for planting, a natural play area and evening lighting. At the same time the scheme is filled with nods to the historical significance of the area with specially commissioned plaques and sculptures.

We supplied a range of irregular-shaped weathering steel Plantapanel, featuring integrated lighting and seating. Each area also included laser-cut recessed lettering with embossed natural history motifs.

Additionally the play area had 2 multifunctional seats, and overlooking the river were 3 completely bespoke and unique ‘horseshoe’ seats, with bench, seat and platform loungers included. These units were also given downlighting to add to the lustre and safety of the area through the evening.

Central to the area is a large platform with feature lighting and tree pit. The platform, intended as seating and impromptu performance space, was built with a modular steel frame clad in douglas fir.

SInce installation the site has seen some challenges from vandalism and misuse, which highlights the importance of appropriate design and material specification in street furniture, but also that there are some extremes that simply can not be predicted and catered for.
